For answers to questions about these workshops or to register for a workshop, call 608-242-4900. You must sign up in advance to attend a workshop. The dates and the times when specific workshops are offered follow the descriptions below.  

Ability Profiler - Do you know your best career aptitudes?  The Ability Profiler measures 9 abilities that are essential for doing well in most jobs.  Knowing your strengths and weaknesses in these 9 areas can help you identify occupations that give you the highest chances to use your abilities. Your Ability Profiler results will also help you learn more about areas where education or additional training will help you perform better.  No group assessment is currently scheduled.  Call for an appointment; (608) 242-4900

Apprenticeship: Earn While You Learn - Careers in the building trades pay $22K - $33K to start…no experience required! If you like to learn by doing, work with your hands, solve problems, and see concrete results? Then an apprenticeship in construction is the place to start!  There is no workshop currently scheduled.

Choice, Change & Adjustment - Provides extra assistance for people looking to change or enhance their careers.  Job seekers, and those dissatisfied with their careers can seek comprehensive career guidance and an introduction to career assessment from a Job Service Counselor.  Offered on February 8 & 26; 12:30 - 2:30 PM.  Also offered on February 5 & 19; 8:00 - 10:00 AM.

Cover Letter Workshop – Learn the basics of writing an effective cover letter. Receive tips on acceptable formats, styles, and ways to avoid common blunders. Participants will have the opportunity to practice writing a cover letter. Offered February 5 & 19; 10:00 - 11:00 AM and on February 11 & 25; 9:30 - 10:30 AM.

How to Prepare for an On-Line Application  - Learn how to prepare and organize yourself for on-line applications.  There is no workshop currently scheduled.

Interview Workshop – Everyone from beginners to interviewing pros will benefit from this workshop.  Preparing means knowing about the industry, the employer and yourself.  Learn to prepare for a job interview.  Offered February 18; 9:30 - 10:30 AM.

Job Sevice Networking Group – The Job Service Networking Group offers job seekers an opportunity to network and share information about job and job searching skills.  Participants can come as often as they like.  No advance registration is required to attend this group.   Offered February 1, 8 & 22; 9:00 - 10:30 AM.

Résumé 101 Workshop – Need a resume and don't know how to start one?  Learn the basics on creating your resume.   Offered February 5 & 19; 9:00 - 10:00 AM.

Résumé 201 Workshop – Improve your current resume.  Discover the elements of an effective resume.  Learn how to highlight your skills and accomplishments to receive an interview.  Must have a written resume to attend.  Offered February 12; 9:00 - 10:00 AM.  Also offered on February 8; 3:00 - 4:00 PM.

Starting Your Own Business Workshop – Thinking about going into business? In this basic class, find out what it takes to run a business. Assess your strengths and skills as a business owner. Learn how to analyze the potential for your business. Discover what information you need and where to find it. Learn to weed out poor business ideas and choose a business that will work for you. Offered February 3; 9:30 - 12:00 Noon.

COMPUTER LAB:

Create a Job Center of Wisconsin Account & Registration - In this class you will learn how to set up your user account and register on the Job Center of Wisconsin site.  Offered February   & 20; 9:30 - 10:30 AM.  Also offered on February 10 & 24; 2:00 - 3:00 PM.

Create a Resume on the Job Center of Wisconsin Site - Create a resume on the Job Center of Wisconsin website and learn the benefits of having a resume on this system.  Offered February 3; 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM.  Also offered on February 10 & 24; 3:30 - 4:30 PM.

"CRT" (Cover Letter/Resume/Thank You Note) - This workshop is designed to address the needs of jobseekers applying via mail, email or employer websites, and responding to interviewers with "Thank You" notes.  This is a computer based workshop.  Must attend Day 1 to register for subsequent session.

CRT Day 1 - February 11; 1:00 - 4:00 PM

CRT Day 2 - February 12; 1:00 - 4:00 PM

CRT Day 3 - February 19; 1:00 - 4:00 PM

How to use a Mouse/Create a Free E-mail Account - Learn the functions and use of a computer mouse, and create your own e-mail account.  Offered February 3; 8:00 - 9:00 AM.  Also offered on February 10 & 24; 12:30 - 1:30 PM.

Job Search on the Job Center of Wisconsin Site - Explore the search tools on the Job Center of Wisconsin website, learn how to use the map search, the keyword or the advance search options.  No workshops currently scheduled.

INDIVIDUAL SERVICES:

Civil Service Typing TestIndividual typing test administered on a word-processor for any state position with typing requirements. Call for an appointment; (608) 242-4900.

Career Counseling – Individual assistance in career planning, problem solving, and organizing for effectiveness.  A licensed professional, experienced career counselor is available to meet with you.  If a face-to-face counseling appointment is impossible due to large distances or conflicting time schedules, counseling help is also available via e-mail or telephone.  For additional information see the Career Counseling Flyer, or contact the Career Counselor at (608) 242-4879 or by e-mail at thomas1.swoboda@dwd.wisconsin.gov.    To schedule: call (608) 242-4900 and request to attend the next Choice, Change & Adjustment Workshop, the Job Center's gateway to career counseling.  Individual appointments may be scheduled immediately following this workshop.

Resume Review Bring your completed resume for a quick critique by Job Service staff.  Offered February 1, 11, 16, 25 & 26; 10:00 - 11:00 AM and February 2, 4, 12, 18  & 22; 1:00 - 2:00 PM.  To schedule an appointment call; (608) 242-4900.

Veteran Services – Veteran staff are available by appointment to meet with veterans (call 608-242-4881 to schedule an appointment). Find help with career planning, view job listings, and receive veteran related information.

CIVIL RIGHTS/EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES WORKSHOP SERIES:  Workshops will be conducted by staff from the City of Madison Equal Opportunities Division.  

Age Discrimination - This workshop aids in complying with equal employment opportunities law in the City of Madison.

Arrest & Conviction Record - Know your rights and responsibilities under the law of arrest & conviction records.  Offered February 4; 10:00 - 11:30 AM. 

Fair Employment Practices - Learn how to avoid or minimize discrimination claims.

Harassment - Harassment claims can devastate not only the individuals involved, but also the entire workplace.  This workshop helps participants with tools for handling these difficult situations.  

Hate Crimes - This presentation defines hate crimes and provides tools to determine if one may have occurred.  

Overview of EOD Services - Become familiar with EOD (Equal Opportunities Division) services. 

Welcoming Diversity - Faces of the workforce continually change, learn about the different values and cultures.
